Ovulation induction is done by giving your fertility injections over a period of 9-10 days while tracking your ovaries for follicles. Once the follicles in the ovaries are matured hCG injection is given to allow final maturation of eggs and after 36 hours is ready for ova-pick up.
Ova-pick up is done under anesthesia and patients might be required to avoid eating for 7-8 hours as per the requirement of our anesthesiologist. Using a TVS ultrasound the ovaries and mature follicles are detected and as many eggs are retrieved from the follicles. The eggs are sent to the lab to check the quality of eggs.
Semen sample is taken from the male partner either by masturbation or sperm retrieval techniques on the same day. The eggs are then fertilised using the sperm sample of the husband. The sperm is directly injected into the eggs; this process is called Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
The fertilised egg is called an embryo. It takes a few days for the number of cells to increase in the embryo.
Once the embryo reaches the required size for transfer. The catheter is carefully inserted into the cervix and the embryo is gently placed in the uterus. Most females do not experience any pain during this procedure and can continue normal activities from the next day.
