A pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging procedure that allows doctors to see the organs in the pelvic region. It is a completely safe procedure for all age groups.
A pelvic ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the organs inside the pelvis. A machine known as a transducer— a handheld device that emits sound waves that bounce off the internal structures in the pelvis and form images on the monitor screen. These images are then viewed by the radiologist to check for any abnormalities in both males and females.
Pelvic ultrasound can be used to detect any abnormalities in the structures lying in the pelvic region of both males and females.
A pelvic ultrasound in males is usually done to assess the bladder, urinary tract, prostate, seminal vesicles, hematomas or pelvic collection. Once an abnormality in the structure is identified specific treatment or further investigation will be recommended accordingly.

Collection of blood or fluid within the pelvic cavity is known as a hematoma— it occurs due to a surgery, or ovarian cysts. On ultrasound it appears as an echogenic or complex fluid collection. A pelvic doppler ultrasound imaging helps determine whether the hematoma is active or resolving. Serial scans may be used to monitor resolution over time.
The procedure is simple and painless, performed by a qualified sonographer at Njinsky IVF & Fertility Clinic. Patients are encouraged to wear loose and comfortable clothing for abdominal pelvic ultrasound. Drink 4-6 glasses of water an hour before your ultrasound appointment and avoid urinating before the procedure as a full bladder is usually required for clear imaging.

You will be asked to lie on an examination table and a warm gel will be applied to your skin and the probe. The sonographist will gently move the probe to see all the structures. You may feel slight pressure but no pain.
