Can white discharge cause infertility?

It is very important for all women to know that white discharge is perfectly natural. Many women consult their gynaecologists thinking that white vaginal discharge causes infertility. The simple answer to that is: No, it doesn’t, nor is it a sign or symptom of infertility. Many females believe in myths or online information about how white discharge is a cause of infertility while this information is false and can result in worries and stress. Vaginal discharge and infertility

The white discharge from the vagina is called leukorrhea. This is the natural secretion from the vagina and cervix that serves to cleanse the female reproductive organs. It maintains a healthy bacterial balance to prevent infections while lubricating the vagina and cervix  . There is an alteration in the consistency, smell, and volume of the discharge during the course of the menstrual cycle.

However, it is important to understand that a normal vaginal discharge is white/clear, odourless(or mild smell), creamy or stretchy and is not associated with itching, pain or any kinds of discomfort. Anything besides the normal discharge might be a sign of infection.

Females can be affected with vaginal infections, therefore, you should see a healthcare provider if your discharge is accompanied by:

• A strong or unpleasant odor
• Green, yellow, or grey color
• Thick, cottage cheese-like appearance with itching
• Burning during urination
• Pelvic pain
• Bleeding after intercourse
• Fever or severe lower abdominal pain

These symptoms may suggest a vaginal or sexually transmitted infection that requires medical evaluation. If these infections are left untreated or become recurrent, they may cause complications if they ascend up the reproductive tract. In rare cases, severe chronic infections affecting reproductive health can lead to complications that may impact reproductive function. Some vaginal and sexually transmitted infections are preventable causes of infertility if left untreated— therefore it is important to seek help as soon as possible.

Diagnosis of infection-related infertility

It is important to understand that normal vaginal discharge does not require any sort of evaluation and testing. However, if you have any doubts regarding change in your vaginal discharge it is important to visit a healthcare professional. After a thorough history and examination your doctor will let you know if you need further tests— if an infection is suspected. Further evaluation includes vaginal/cervical swabs, routine blood tests, urine routine examination and culture and imaging studies (if a complicated chronic infection is suspected that may have damaged the fallopian tubes)— such as pelvic ultrasounds  or hysterosalpingography (HSG).

Treatment for infertility issues caused by infections

Normal vaginal discharge does not require any medical treatment—- counselling is usually required by a healthcare professional if a patient has any doubts regarding the normal vaginal discharge. Vaginal infections usually result in foul smelling discharge along with discomfort and required thorough treatment. Treatment depends on the cause of the infection and may include antibiotics for bacterial infections, antifungal medications for fungal infections, or antiviral therapy where appropriate. Patients are also counselled towards precautions to avoid infections in the future. This is all necessary to avoid infections ascending up the reproductive tract that may damage fallopian tubes which may result in infertility— although this is uncommon. However, if a patient is diagnosed with infertility due to infection, infertility treatment is usually required. Female infertility treatment may include IVF—-if the fallopian tubes have been damaged. While male infertility treatment may include treating the underlying infection, addressing its effects on sperm quality, and recommending assisted reproductive techniques where appropriate.
