Celiac disease and infertility

STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases, are often treatable when diagnosed early and managed appropriately. However, if left untreated or if infections recur, they can cause permanent damage to the reproductive organs and affect fertility. Understanding the connection between sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and fertility is important for protecting your reproductive health.
STDs can cause inflammation of the reproductive organs in both men and women. If this inflammation is not treated promptly, it can lead to permanent damage. Chronic inflammation may cause blockage of the sperm ducts in men and the fallopian tubes in women. In some cases, these infections do not cause noticeable symptoms, allowing them to persist for months or even years before being diagnosed.
Persistent infection can lead to scarring, blockage of reproductive structures, and impaired sperm or egg function, ultimately reducing the chances of conception.
Many sexually transmitted infections are preventable, and early treatment can significantly reduce the risk of infertility. Some infections, particularly chlamydia and gonorrhoea, may cause little or no symptoms while silently damaging the reproductive tract.
In women, untreated infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which may cause scarring and blockage of the fallopian tubes and increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. In men, these infections can cause inflammation of the epididymis (epididymitis), which may affect sperm transport and fertility.
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are among the most common sexually transmitted infections associated with infertility in both men and women.
Emerging evidence also suggests that Mycoplasma genitalium may contribute to cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and fertility problems in women. While infections such as syphilis, genital herpes, and HIV do not usually cause infertility directly, they can affect overall reproductive health, increase the risk of pregnancy complications, and make individuals more susceptible to acquiring other sexually transmitted infections.
The diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections often begins when a patient experiences symptoms such as a burning sensation during urination, pain during intercourse, unusual or foul-smelling discharge from the vagina or penis, lower abdominal pain, genital sores, ulcers, rashes, or testicular pain and swelling. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical evaluation and appropriate testing as soon as possible.
However, many sexually transmitted infections remain completely asymptomatic. For this reason, sexually active individuals—especially those at increased risk—should undergo regular STI screening, even in the absence of symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent long-term complications, including infertility.
Many bacterial sexually transmitted infections can be effectively treated with antibiotics when diagnosed early. However, antibiotics cannot reverse scarring or permanent damage that has already occurred. This is why prevention and early treatment remain the best approach.
